Creating the magazine

Digipak idea (1)

This is the photo we are thinking about including in the digipak about the band. Our band will be Hope and Josh, Josh as the singer and Hope will be the instrumentals/actor for videos. This will make our band seem different and appealing to both genders. In lots of alternative/indie bands it is a mixture of genders in the band. This also works for us as we use both Hope and Josh.

Location for promo

Here is our final location for the music promo. We decided not to film in a garage but the kitchen as we can use one side without appliances to look like a light art studio. This look good to film as it was bright but also conventional to our genre as it wasn't too OTT but very natural and realistic.

Storyboard

This is our storyboard for our music video, it shows the process of a girl breaking up with her boyfriend and painting what she feels.

permissions

Here are our permission slips from the location and actors for our music video.

health and safety

To film in the garage we will need to move boxes and other things from the garage. We could drop something and hurt ourselves. To minimise this risk we will be careful not to carry something that is too heavy for us to carry so that we won't drop them.

Risk Assessment

During filming our production we will have many risks that need to be taken into account to ensure the health and safety of not only the actors/actresses, but also ourselves.

Venue: Garage
Description of activity: Filming our music video in a art studio like setting including dressing the set, installing lights & moving heavy objects.

Possible HAZARDS:

  • dropping/falling heavy objects on people (4)
  • fairy lights and fabric could cause a fire or heat (4)
  • food and drink could cause slippery surface (2)
  • inappropriate clothing (1)
(1- low hazard, 2-3- medium hazard, 4-5 - high hazard)

Control measures:

  • no food and drink on set
  • wear correct clothing
  • fairy lights will not go near fabric
  • all heavy objects removed or put securely on floor
To make sure there are no risks we will get everyone on set to follow these requirements.

Fonts

Font 1 and font 5 were found to be the most popular, we have decided to create a mock poster that included both fonts, we will then ask the general public to pick which one they like the best and go with the majority vote.

Actors

For our music video we are using Hope. She will be able to represent the girl in the video well as she can paint well and portray a heartbroken girl. This is conventional as well as heartbroken girls are very common. Also as she is mid-teens she will be similar to many girls going through the same. Our genre keeps the actors quite plain and natural so we will try and achieve this by making her seem quite natural/relatable.

Audience feedback on digipak poster and music promo

To gain some audience feedback on everything we've done so far, we handed out questionnaires to people who our similar to our target audience (aged 17-19, male and female). We showed them our digipak & poster as well as playing the song and explaining the idea.

Most people liked our idea and preferred much more to our other as its unique.  They also liked the art aspect as its creative and will keep them watching it again and again. They said one thing we could change is the performance and have it done in the garage/art studio too. When filming we will try this out.

(insert pie chart). We asked people if they thought the song and video would match. 10 out of 11 said yes, while 1 said no as they thought its too much of a pop video and said that if we maybe included more performance it would fit more so we will add some more performance. Once they saw the storyboard matched with the lyrics they said the singing and story line work well together and the narrative is like a puzzle almost.

For the fourth question we asked if it fits our genre. Everyone said due to the quirkiness of the video and the arty aspect that it does as many alternative/indie videos have an art vibe to it. Also the heartbreak theme is like it as many songs from this genre are e.g. Arctic Monkeys - Arabella etc. The animation also fits as its different and not done often. Although people said that the clips we showed them were too short, so we will make longer one to practice/ see if it works.

The digipak and poster were liked by people. They liked how a similar theme was kept throughout and the picture fits to the song. They said that the digipak could include less about tours and more about the band and maybe include the lyrics. When making the final digipak we will include band info/lyrics as it will appeal more to our audience.

Props

The props that we are going to use are a mannequin, an easel and artist items such as paint brushes, paints, canvas' and fabric.

We are going to use a mannequin because the girl that the narrative is based on is very artist so we thought that she could have a mannequin with some fabric on it in the corner of the room. This is used to give a little bit of background for the girl and give the audience the impression that she is artist and can design clothes and other things like that.

We are using an easel to put a canvas on it. This is going to add to the art theme that we are going to have in her room. We are also going to use this easel so that we can do the scene in which we want the girl to splatter paint. This will make it easier as we will have a place for the actor to aim when she is doing this theme and we will have a definite place to film the scene.

We are using paint brushes to use in the scene where the girl splatters paint. We are also using paint brushes to add to the arts room we will be filming as it will give some realism to the room and give the audience the impression that the girl actually lives there and does do art in that room.

We are using paints in our music promo as it will add to the realism of her room and give her a bit more background. We will also be using the paints in the scene where she splatters the paint as she will need paints to this with due to the fact that you can't splatter paint without using paints.

We are going to use a canvas to put on the easel that is going to be in her room. We are most likely going to be using this to put the paint splatters on when we are shooting the scene where the girl splatter paint. This will also add to the background of the room as it would be unlikely that the girl would have an easel and painting equipment without having a canvas to paint on.

We are going to be using the fabric to put on the mannequin to give the audience the impression that the girl is going to make something with the fabric but is taking a break from it due to the recent break up she faced. We thought that putting a mannequin with some fabric on it would look good among all the other arts objects that are going to be in her room.

location (plan)

For our music video we are going to try and recreate an art studio either using a room or a gazebo outside. We will also use a park/outside for other shots and will switch between them. The art studio will include paintings on the walls, paint brushes, easels etc and will represent the colours as a band as well as fitting with the lyrics.

We have taken inspiration from this room to dress the set and will try and recreate it using art things, fairy lights and fabrics. To link with the narrative this is where she paints her feelings and is the main location in the video. Also the second location will include walkways, streets and greenery to make the video quite fresh and outside. We will take inspiration from these photos and try and find a location similar to the area.

We will also include a piece of fabric on the wall and will flick paint at it to form a heart shape. This is the main part of the video and will set in the narrative and the song about heartbreak. For performance we will paint the man singing and use stop-motion so once completed looks like he's singing on the paper in paint or will use the radio as a way of performance coming through.  This tackles the problem of the song being sung by a man but the video only having a woman in it.

How will our music video fit the conventions of the pop genre?

Our video will use the conventions of a music promo by following the basic conventions such as close ups of the singer, mid shots of the actors and we will use mostly straight cuts when editing so that our video will look realistic and make it slightly more relatable for the audience.
How will you use the conventions of your chosen genre of video?
By taking a few lyrics of the song and basing the video around them, that will make our genre of video amplification. We will follow the conventions of amplification and make it partly narrative based and partly performance based. We will try to give both the performance and the narrative equal amounts of time in the video and will use the typical shots and editing that you see in this type of music video.

Will you use, develop, change or subvert those conventions?
Will we use the conventions of our chosen genre of video as this will make it look more realistic and make it more appealing for our audience. This is because the audience is used to seeing these conventions and will recognise them in our video which will hopefully make them want to watch our video again.

Costume ideas

As our music video focuses on an artist we decided to go for a typical look e.g. the oversized shirt as a form of protection from the paint.
A pair of leggings as they are probably on of the most comfortable items of clothing in the world, this would make them an ideal item of clothing for a female to wear when they are going through a hard time as they don't particularly want to put a huge amount of effort into what they look like.
We went with a high top style of shoe as they are very common and the majority of people own a pair which could have a positive effect on the viewers as they could see something that they own and feel like they can relate to the character in an odd sort of way,.
