Intertextuality

Intertextuality theories:
  • John Stewart says that: Most modern media incorporates, raids and reconstructs.
  • Julia Kristeva says that: Any text is the absorption and transformation of another.
Both of these theories suggest that every idea of modern media id an adaptation of a previous piece of media, and example of this could be MTV, this being the first music channel, then many others soon followed such as, 4 Music VH1 and Viva.

The promo I have chosen to analyse is 'Material Girl' by Madonna.
In this video Madonna has take A LOT of inspiration from a Marilyn Monroe song, there are very few differences between the two videos, in this shot we see Madonna surrounded by a group of men in suits, this could suggest that she (like Marilyn Monroe) is desired by the majority of the male population at this point in her career.
In this shot we see Madonna being carried by the men in suits, emphasise her wealth in a way suggesting that money is power, you could also say that she may be exploiting the men because of the wealth of how she was viewed back when she made the video.
This shot is again showing Madonna surrounded by the men in suits, all of these shots show a great deal of femininity as there is a lot of the colour pink around, suggesting that she is extremely feminine.
Again Madonna is surrounded by the men in suits, but this time they are in more of an order, suggesting that she can control the men, or there are the to add emphasis to the song, e.g. the song is named material girl so she may view the men as possessions rather than people.
We see Madonna with an actual material possession in this shot, which looks to be and expensive piece of clothing, which again adds emphasis to the song lyrics, 'and I am a material girl'

Language

Synaesthesia:
A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, and when hearing a sound produces a visualisation a colour.

Narrative in music promo's
In songs the narrative rarely is complicated and therefore often fragmentary.
Fragmentary narrative may help the repeatability of promo's.

Andrew Goodwin
Illustration-the promo illustrates the ideas/ narrative in the song lyrics
Amplification-uses a key idea/ image from the lyrics and develops it into a concept within the promo, a link remains between the lyric and the promo
Disjuncture-the promo bears no resemblance to the lyric or its meaning; abstract; often seen as unconventional/ 'arty' videos; creates a new range of the meaning

Conventions of a Music Promo

Almost every music video will include lip syncing, this is only an exception if the video is a live performance of the artist singing in concert.
The tempo of the song is taken into consideration when the video is being edited, this make sure that it flows and doesn't look out of time or odd when the music and video are but together

Music Promo

The genre of music the band aim at is Indie Rock music; this is a genre of alternative rock the originally started in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980’s.

The video is filmed in a very interesting way as there is one continuous shot all the way through the video, this also has no cuts and very little if no editing, filming the video like this could suggest that they wanted to tell a story through out and make it as easy to understand as possible another reason for this could be that they wanted to make the video look effortless and easy.

The contents of the video could be considered quite confusing as at the very beginning it starts off with the lead singer standing by a blue door in the middle of a field, as the video progresses we see him walking down the field gradually meeting other members of the band and other components of the video such as meeting two women at the bar with a cocktail, or standing with a man at a make shift bus stop checking the time on their watches in sync.

Like I mentioned in the paragraph above this music video was filmed in the middle of a field in what looks like the middle of nowhere, a reason for this may have been because the field acts as a blank canvases so can be interpreted into the visions of the band members or the solo artist, another reason could have been because of the mass amount of space available for the band to use which makes it easier to film a video with no cuts included in it.
